Ultrasonic leak detector systems have existed for years. This type of detection has helped businesses find leaks in various applications, such as gas detection, oil leaks, and water leaks. This technology has now been applied to residential homes to help detect any plumbing issues. In addition, they are great for detecting water leaks in basements, attics, and crawl spaces. The basic ultrasonic leak detector works by detecting the transfer of ultrasonic energy from some solid to another through a gap or opening.

 

These detection systems work best when there is moisture present. However, they can also detect leaks in drywall and other materials that are totally dry. There are two types of ultrasonic leak detection systems: passive and active. A passive ultrasonic leak detector uses a compressor to generate ultrasonic sound waves and then sends them out along with a connected cable; this means that once the sound wave reaches its destination, the water will begin to leak.

 

An active ultrasonic leak detector uses an air gap of any appropriate size, which must be filled with compressed air or some similar fluid to increase the sensitivity. Once the air gaps are full, the detector will alert the homeowner or business owner by releasing an audible siren or alarm. The latter type of detection system can detect even the smallest of air leaks. Some manufacturers offer an adjustable sensitivity feature, which means that the system will work better if the area where the leak is located is not completely dry.
